Reading Diary B: Folklore of Laos

The Wizard and the Beggar

  • The story is about a man who was very poor and claimed that if someone ever fed him what he desired he would be forever grateful and would never forget.
  • He cam upon a wizard and the wizard told him that people these days are careless and ungrateful
  • So the poor man went on and the a dog told him that his master had forgotten his good services 
  • The poor man then went on an a buffalo and the buffalo told him that his master as well had forgotten of his services and was left to die
  • The Wizard then gave the poor man a magic jewel that granted all his desires and kept a second jewel that allowed you to fly for himself
  • The poor man with time became ungrateful and greedy and then went to kill the wizard ofr the second jewel and the wizard got away with both jewels

The Legend of the Rice 
  • The story tells that rice used to be really big 
  • The old woman decided that the granaries needed to be big so she torn down the ones that were she had
  • While the work was being done the rice was ripe and it rolled to where the work was being done
  • The old woman angered hit the rice and said "why didn't you stay in the fields until you were needed" and the rice broke into thousand of pieces
  • From then on out rice was to be picked when needed and much smaller then it used to be.
One Woman
  • The woman promised to marry seven suitors at the same time
  • They all found out at once of her plans and decided to kill her
  • She then got them to sell themselves to a captain and got silver for them
  • They escaped and she decided to invite them for a last supper and poisoned them
  • She then got them all buried for free
